Orthotics and Biomechanics
Doctor Specializing in Foot Conditions
Sometimes the simplest solutions can be the easiest to overlook. When it comes to the feet, orthotics offer patients a simple and reliable method of dealing with a wide range of foot problems. An orthotic is a special insert, placed into your shoes, that is meant to encourage natural function in the feet. Come to our office at Houston Foot Specialists to learn more!
What are Orthotics?
Orthotics are often misunderstood. We often find that arch supports and shoe inserts fall into the same category. While there is a similarity in the fact that they are all basically inserts that go inside your shoes to help your feet feel better, they have some distinctive differences that set them apart.
A basic arch support or shoe insert can be found at most pharmacies and is generally a one-kind-suits-all type of support. These provide extra cushioning and support your natural arch while standing and walking. Because they are meant for the general public they likely will not support your needs.
It is when you step up to specialized supports that things change a bit. These are custom-molded supports prescribed by a podiatrist that are unique to your feet and yours alone. They are designed solely with your foot structure and movement in mind. They are generally used to accommodate present foot problems and/or control an abnormal or irregular walking pattern.
How Can These Custom Supports Help Me?
In the same way that a pair of glasses can improve your vision and give you greater confidence in the way you see, these customizd supportes can improve foot problems, resolve pain, and also bring more confidence in your ability to carry out daily tasks and other activities. They make it more comfortable to stand, walk, and even run. They absorb shock more efficiently, improve your balance, and can help take pressure off any sore spots on your feet.
We have used these inserts to help treat and prevent such problems as plantar fasciitis, bunions, diabetic foot ulcers, tendonitis, bursitis, ankle discomfort, arthritis, and heel pain. Depending on the nature and severity of your symptoms, we may use one of three kinds: rigid, soft, or semi-rigid. Rigid are firm in nature and designed to control the function of your foot. Patients often find that rigid pairs also help alleviate aches and pains in their legs and lower back.
Soft supports are made of cushioned materials and are great for those with diabetic, arthritic or deformed foot structures. They take pressure off of the foot, absorb shock during movement, and help with balance. Semi-rigid, which have a combination of both soft and hard supports are helpful for those with flat feet, high arches and athletes who want to stay healthy and pain-free.
Our process is simple. During your visit, our Houston foot specialist will use a device to capture images of your feet. Based on these 3-D images, we will be able to design an insert that will perfectly suit your foot size and account for any abnormalities in its shape or positioning. Over time, you will see a marked change in your gait and a decrease in foot pain, among other positive benefits. Call us at (713) 467-8886 to order your orthotic today!
